May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month: Protect What Matters
The sun is finally peeking through the clouds, bringing warmer weather, beach days, and backyard barbecues. But before you run outside to soak up those glorious rays, we need to talk about something incredibly close to my heart.
Because May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, it serves as the perfect annual reminder to pause and prioritize our skin health. I lost my beautiful mother to Melanoma. Her journey taught me just how vital proactive sun protection really is, and now I want to help others avoid that same heartbreak.
At Sun Shield Shop, we absolutely want you to love the sun. We just want you to protect your skin while you do it! The good news is that keeping your skin safe doesn't have to be complicated or boring. Let’s look at a few easy, highly effective ways to shield your shine all year long.
5 Simple Sun-Safe Habits to Start Today
Building a sun-safe routine is the best way to keep your skin glowing and healthy. Here are five easy habits you can adopt right now.
1. Slather on the SPF
Sunscreen is your absolute best friend. You want to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every single day, even when it is cloudy. Apply it generously to your face, neck, ears, and any other exposed areas. And remember the golden rule of sun care: reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating.
2. Seek Out the Shade
You do not have to hide indoors all day, but taking a break in the shade makes a massive difference. The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you are out and about during these hours, grab a beach umbrella, find a leafy tree, or relax under a patio awning.
3. Dress for Success (and Protection)
Your wardrobe can actually be a powerful tool for sun protection. Tightly woven fabrics offer a great physical barrier against UV rays. You can even find clothing specially designed with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF). Throw on a lightweight, long-sleeved shirt and a wide-brimmed hat to keep your skin happy and sunburn-free.
4. Rock Those Sunglasses
Your eyes and the delicate skin around them need protection, too. Grab a stylish pair of sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection. Not only will you look effortlessly cool, but you will also block harmful rays from causing long-term damage to your vision.
5. Check Yourself Out
Getting to know your own skin is one of the smartest things you can do. Spend a few minutes each month scanning your body for any new spots, changing moles, or unusual growths. If you see something, say something to your doctor!
How to Spot the Signs of Melanoma
Since early detection saves lives, dermatologists recommend using the ABCDE method when doing your monthly skin checks. Keep an eye out for these warning signs:
- Asymmetry: One half of the mole does not match the other half.
- Border: The edges are irregular, ragged, or blurred.
- Color: The color is not uniform and may include shades of brown, black, pink, red, or white.
- Diameter: The spot is larger than a pencil eraser (about 6mm), though melanomas can sometimes be smaller.
- Evolving: The mole is changing in size, shape, or color over time.
If you notice any of these signs, book an appointment with a dermatologist right away.
